Ergonomic advantages of a balance board or stamat

The ergonomic benefits of a balance board or active tribal mat while working on the computer are great. Because we spend most of our time sitting in the office, it is important to regularly get out of the office chair and work standing up or do small exercises at your desk

With the help of a balance board, the body is further activated during the standing posture, so that the smaller muscle groups also participate. This creates a fitter feeling, active work posture and positive vibe during screen work. Try standing during an online meeting, you will experience more alertness and be able to concentrate better on the conversation because blood flow improves. A comfortable stamat allows you to maintain standing longer, you experience less stress on the joints while standing.

What does science say about sedentary behavior?

We basically sit too long... In 2019, Dutch adults aged 18 to 64 spend an average of 9.3 hours a day. Workers and computer users sit slightly longer, especially if they work full time (32 hours or more); 9.7 hours on average and as much as 10.3 hours on weekdays.

Homeworkers in the Covid era sit relatively long: 7.1 hours during work and 4.2 hours in leisure time. The same group in 2019 still sits for 6.6 hours during work and 3.3 hours in leisure time. Thus, the home work situation has not made a positive contribution to our physical condition. According to the Health Council, prolonged sitting is associated with a higher risk of premature death. more than 8 hours a day can lead to 27% more risk of premature death than sitting less than 4 hours. Cardiovascular disease is number one when it comes to these risks (74% when sitting for 8 hours a day).

There is still no clear guideline for our sitting behavior in the Netherlands. The Health Council simply advises "avoid sitting too long. Much sitting is sometimes compensated by fanatic exercise. But unfortunately the negative effects of prolonged sitting are not counteracted by fanatical exercise. Precisely interrupting the sitting posture and alternating walking, sitting, standing, half-sitting and cycling offer resistance to the negative effects of sedentary work.

For people with sedentary jobs, the advice is to briefly interrupt sitting regularly, preferably every ten minutes, by micro (briefly flapping hands and stretching exercises, and every half hour by a macro break (standing and walking). You can further pick up compensating sitting by going outside in the evening or during your lunch break and walking for half an hour or more. This regimen keeps your blood flowing and allows waste products to be disposed of. With a combination of micro, and macro breaks and walking, you will make the most impact and keep the body moving and fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

With the following questions, we think you can better determine the best balance board for you.

Can a balance board cause me injury?
No, using a balance board is completely safe. You control the intensity of the movement and our balance boards do not require a trained body to use. It's all about the subtle movement, which ensures that the small muscles are used. Using a balance board can prevent injuries, though, by eliminating static posture during standing screen work.
Are there different colors of the stamat for sale?
Trunk rats are available in a variety of colors and patterns. On our website you can see a selection of the range, which we can supply from stock. More types of material and colors are available to order, please contact our advisors for advice at 010-470 26 11 or email info@backshop.nl.
Is a standing desk required to use a balance board?
Untrained users generally do like to have a handhold while using the balance board. This type of product is also not offered as a training tool, but rather as support while working standing behind a sit-stand desk. A sit-stand desk that can be easily adjusted to the correct working height offers more opportunities to change positions while working.
