Dutch occupational health and safety standards for office chairs

NEN-EN 1335 and NPR 1813 are used as occupational health and safety standards for office chairs. All ergonomic office chairs in our range meet the highest European occupational health and safety standards and regulations in terms of adjustability and dimensions. You are assured of a good quality ergonomic office chair that will last for years and ensure that you sit comfortably. The risk of physical complaints decreases enormously if you sit on an office chair that is tailored to your body and your work.

What are good search criteria for ergonomic office chairs?

True, ergonomic office chairs are characterized by the various adjustment options for seat height, seat angle, backrest and armrests. This allows the chair to be adjusted to the physical characteristics of the user. Backshop uses the following standards in compiling its range of ergonomic office chairs:

  • An office chair should provide support and comfort; the ideal sitting position should not be forced. Ergonomic office chairs should adapt to the body and not the other way around.
  • The shoulders must be able to move freely; they direct the arms when doing fine motor work at the computer or laptop.
  • A moving backrest that supports the back in the right places improves work posture and prevents unnecessary complaints in the neck, shoulders and back.
  • Preferably, the chair has short, adjustable and soft armrests. If the armrests do not protrude past the abdomen, you will be able to sit well at the desk.
  • The armrests can be positioned at shoulder width and at the correct height, so that the shoulders do not droop but are not raised too high either, and the elbows can rest alongside the body.
Good arm support improves circulation, prevents fatigue and neck and shoulder complaints.
  • The seat must be able to tilt back a minimum of 15°. The angle between the backrest and seat, at the level of the pelvis, is less than 90°.
  • Feet should be able to rest on the floor. A footrest is used only when the chair is set too high because of a desk that is too high and not adjustable.
  • The chair should be comfortable on all fronts; a forced sitting position can cause discomfort and complaints.

What is the ideal sitting position at the desk?

Purchasing a good, ergonomic office chair is not enough. By applying the following steps to adjusting your office chair, you're sure to be in the right place:

  • Put the feet flat on the floor.
  • Make sure the legs are slightly lower than the pelvis. This promotes blood flow in the legs and reduces lower back pain.
  • Make sure the angle at the knees is about 100 degrees and that a fist fits between the hollow of the knee and seat.
  • Sit as far back in the chair as possible so that the top of the buttocks also rest against the backrest.
  • Make sure the back is supported underneath by the backrest and lumbar support.
  • Sit up straight, making sure the head remains straight and the ears remain above the shoulders at all times.
  • Place the shoulders slightly back and down. Make sure that there is and remains relaxation in the shoulders.
  • Make sure the elbows are bent at a 90° angle.
  • Place the forearms on the armrests. The shoulders should feel relaxed.
  • Make sure the desktop fits the armrests of your chair and do not lean forward on the desktop.
  • Preferably work in a variety of sitting, standing and half-sitting positions and change positions every hour.

When is an office chair ergonomic?

The definition of ergonomics is adapting the product to the human being. So in the case of ergonomic office chairs, it means that the chair can be adjusted to the user rather than the other way around. Many times, an office chair is not selected for adjustability, but for appearance. The danger of this is that the office chair does not fit the physique of the user or the task to be performed. A receptionist makes different demands on a chair than a data typist, and a meeting room has a different type of chair than an executive office. In short, an office chair is ergonomic when it can be optimally adjusted to the user of the chair so that they experience the most comfort while sitting. This ensures that no unnecessary muscle tension is built up in the body and one can work on the task at hand in a relaxed and attentive manner.

When selecting a product, it is important to determine in advance the purpose of the purchase and your requirements for the product. Then use our search filters to come to the selection of the right product that fits your symptoms and workplace. No person is the same, so above all choose the product that suits your personal needs. By adapting the workplace to the person rather than the other way around, many physical complaints can be prevented or remedied.

Is there also an ergonomic chair for heavy people?

Yes, we also have an excellent chairs for heavier people within our range of ergonomic chairs. Take a look at the Ergofy XXL office chair. This office chair is suitable for people who are heavier than 120 kg and still want to adopt a dynamic sitting position as well. This chair is equipped with a weighted mechanism and gas spring, which also ensures longevity under greater loads. The sliding seat ensures that people of different heights (1.60m - 1.90m) can sit comfortably on it. The back angle can also be adjusted independently and features extra-wide lumbar support, by means of an air cushion.

Office chair for tall people with or without complaints?

Tall people and back pain, it sounds logical but doesn't have to be. The search for a good office chair for tall people is difficult. Back problems and tall stature are sometimes inseparable. Conventional office chairs are generally too small or adjustable too low. This results in less comfort due to the lack of adjustability.

Adjustment of seat height, seat depth, seat width, back height and armrest height should be achievable. In particular, people with a height of more than 1.90 meters often have difficulty finding a chair that fits well. Research by EMG specialist Prof. Erik Peper has shown that many physical complaints in tall people are caused by incorrect sitting posture. This is where matching correct material in the form of a well-fitting chair is of great importance.

Backshop has excellent office chairs for people who are taller than average. It is essential that the backrest provide adequate support. Additional lumbar support may also be required for people with longer stature. The RH Logic 400 XL office chair or the Löffler Panamero chair is a good example of this. We would be happy to advise you which chair is best suited to your posture and activities. Contact our advisors at 010-4602611 or via chat.
