It may not be the most interesting part in setting up your workspace, but cable management is certainly a very essential one. If you procrastinate, you take for granted risks of malfunction, carelessness and simply falling off. Not wise.

Backshop has a range of high-quality cable management products. Cable management is often already included as standard with our monitor arms, laptop stands and other accessories for your home or workstation.

What is cable management?

Cable management is the organization and tidying of power, data, video and other cables in your (home) workplace. This also applies to industrial and (para-)medical environments such as doctors' offices, hospitals, laboratories, warehouses and factories, etc.

Because of the danger of loose cables, the health and safety implications of cable management are already a high priority in these environments.

Within our offerings, we focus on cable management in your office environment at work or at home. Cable management solutions come in many different forms.

Most modern desks come with (limited) built-in cable management capabilities. For example, with electrification in the desk or cable trays that allow you to run cables under the desktop. But what then? You can use a wide range of inexpensive cable management accessories that keep cables around your desk neat and out of the way. But why exactly is cable management so important?

Why is cable management important at your (home) workstation?

Here are 5 key reasons why cable management should not be seen as a nice option but as a must:

  • Poor or no cable management invites accidents
  • Without cable management, your cables quickly become entangled (called "cable spaghetti") or hang exposed and take a once-over when vacuuming
  • Usually it goes well and cables hang well for years. Sure, can look nicer; but otherwise, so what, right...? Wrong, actually. Because tangled cables are risky. Sooner or later, it's bingo! Someone trips over a wire or pulls a cable that won't reach its port because it's tied up with another cable. And then that cable, or multiple cables, is pulled. With 3 possible outcomes: The cable and/or port to which it is connected is damaged and may fail at a later time. Annoying when the cable is connected to an indispensable, expensive and sensitive device. The cable is disconnected from the device, potentially causing it to malfunction.
  • Cable management makes for a more efficient work environment: Someone (accidentally) disconnects a computer, the speakers or whatever. You crawl under the desk to reconnect it and.... are faced with a mass of dusty wires and no idea where to start. All you do know is that Murphy's Law says that if you unplug another cable, it will be the one that should never be unplugged.
  • Too many loose cables creates too much risk and stress. On the plus side, a good cable management system ensures that when you want to upgrade your cables or replace devices, it will be a lot easier if they are organized.

Cable management keeps your office looking orderly

Let's face it. While cable management is not primarily about making things look pretty, it does. And it's more important than it seems.
